Credit Reporting

The recently issued annual report of Equifax suggests that the growth in consumer credit also triggered growth in credit reporting. Consolidated data for the past three years are shown in the table below.

Equifax (Amounts in millions of dollars)
  2002 2001 2000
Operating income 1,109.3 1,109.8. 1,027.2
Operating income margin 32% 31% 31%
Net income from operations 191.3 177.7 166.7
Stock price per share* $23.14 $24.15 $16.98

* Year-end

An interesting sidelight is the proportion of its revenues and operating income that it obtains from providing services outside of the U.S. It is not clear whether the low volume in other regions reflects competition from other credit reporting agencies or lower demand (and pricing) for the service.

  Revenues Operating Income
North America 81% 91%
Europe 11%   3%
Latin America   7%   5%
Other   1%   1%
Totals 100% 100%
