A Statement Stuffer for Credit Cards
Firms issuing credit cards might find these tips for shopping online from a recent article in the New York Times helpful to pass along to consumers.
- Look for security features before giving your credit card number. Such signs are a closed-lock or unbroken-key icon in the frame of the browser window, and a change from "http" to "htps" in the retailer's address when processing a transaction.
- Look for a statement of the retailer's privacy policies or how they protect your personal information.
- Avoid dubious sites. Be sure that they have a verifiable phone number and mailing address.
- Pay with a credit card, not a debit card, check or money order. Federal laws give you the greatest protection when using a credit card.
- If you are worried about online interception of your credit card number, use the telephone.
- Shred papers containing your credit card number before tossing out sales slips,
bills and other documents.
